Sexual health is part of your overall health. Your primary care provider can help with questions about sex, relationships, birth control, pregnancy planning, pain during sex, changes in sexual desire, erections, vaginal dryness, menopause, fertility, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These are common health concerns, and everyone deserves respectful care, regardless of age, relationship status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
Many people feel uncomfortable talking about sexual health. That is normal. You do not have to wait for your doctor to ask. You can start by saying, "I have a question about my sexual health."
Before your appointment, take note of your symptoms, when they started, your medicines or supplements, and your questions. Honest information helps your provider understand your concerns and recommend the most appropriate care.
Ask questions if something is not clear. You can ask why a test is recommended, what your treatment options are, what benefits or side effects to expect, and when you should return for follow-up. You can also ask how your personal health information will be kept confidential or request to speak with your provider alone if that helps you feel more comfortable.
If you are sexually active, have a new sexual partner, have symptoms, think you may have been exposed to an STI, or simply have concerns about your sexual health, ask whether STI testing is recommended for you. Many STIs do not cause symptoms, so a person can have an infection without knowing it.
If you develop severe pelvic or genital pain, fever, heavy bleeding, genital sores, or have experienced sexual assault, seek medical care promptly. If you prefer confidential sexual health services or do not have a primary care provider, regional sexual health clinics may provide testing, counselling, and treatment.
One honest conversation can improve your health and help you make decisions together with your primary care provider that fit your needs and values.
